Florida businessman files for divorce after wife's arrest

A Tampa area businessman has filed for divorce less than six months into their marriage after accusing her of a number of crimes, with which she's been charged.

The man is 77 and his wife is 26. He owns a medical supply business in Tampa, and they married in August in Sarasota.

Suspicions toward the woman were raised when she attempted to cash a $1 million check that had both the names of husband and wife on it at a check-cashing location in Tampa. When the man was contacted about the check, he initially said he didn't want to pursue the matter because he didn't want her deported to her native Israel, according to media reports.

Later, she sent three checks – each for $333,000 – to her sister for safekeeping, and two of them wound up being cashed in New Jersey.

The man eventually told police he felt he was a crime victim, and ultimately, the woman was arrested and charged with organized fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit money laundering and exploitation of the elderly. She was jailed in Hillsborough County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

The man's daughter said she and other family members didn't know the two had married.

Anyone entering a high-asset marriage – at any age – should take lengths to protect their wealth. And that's especially true if the higher-wealth spouse has heirs, as this man does.

Before saying "I do," it's wise to seek legal advice about the protections a prenuptial agreement can provide, as well as ways to assure that professional practices and financial accounts will be protected in the case of a divorce.
