With divorce mediation, communication is key

The divorce mediation process gives you and your ex a chance to really work together. This allows you to come to a fair agreement with as little conflict as possible. It allows you to put your children first. It gives you a chance to avoid a lengthy and contentious divorce.

However, it is not always easy. Working with someone you are actively divorcing can be complicated. The key is to focus on communication at every step in the process. A few tips include:

  • Give your conversations enough time. Do not rush through them. Do not expect to work everything out in five minutes. This is an important process and you must give both you and your ex enough time to talk.
  • Make specific statements, not generalizations. Make sure your ex knows exactly what you mean and there is no room for error. Even a simple miscommunication can be problematic.
  • Talk about yourself more than your ex. Use the word "I" more than the word "you." This may sound counterintuitive, but the point isn't to be selfish. It's to avoid saying something that sounds aggressive as if you are attacking your ex. But keeping the focus on yourself, that's what you do.
  • Actively listen to what your ex has to say. Don't just wait for your turn to speak. Don't just get defensive about every little thing. Step back, give them time to talk, and listen to what they tell you.

These tips can certainly help, but it is also important to make sure you know exactly how mediation works and what legal steps to take.
