Mediation may help your children with divorce

You know that you want a divorce, and your spouse agrees. Both of you feel that the marriage is not working. It's time to end things.

However, you do have children together. You know that they may feel like they are caught up in the divorce proceedings, which they never asked for, and it can be stressful for them. While the two of you may both want a divorce, that doesn't mean the child custody side of the case will go smoothly. It can be long, complicated and difficult to navigate.

If your goal is to make it easier for your children, some experts do suggest mediation. They note that the focus is on the children when you use mediation. It's you and your spouse working together to find out what works for your kids, rather than you working against your spouse as you both try to obtain custody rights. This keeps the conflict level lower, and it puts your children first. At the end of the day, while the termination of the traditional family unit may still present some challenges for them, this can help make it easier.

On top of that, you should know that modern courts tend to want both parents to stay involved unless there is a very good reason for a different custody arrangement. Mediation allows you and your spouse to have more control as you work toward sharing custody and accomplishing this goal.

If you have not considered mediation before, make sure that you really take the time to weigh all your options and see what is best for your family.
