It has been a long and difficult road to parenthood for one well-known actor, but he has finally come out on top. Some of our readers may have been following the case of Jason Patric, known for his role in The Lost Boys, among many others.
He has been in a drawn-out child custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Danielle Schreiber over their 4-year-old son named Gus. The couple dated off and on for about 10 years until they officially broke up in 2012. During their dating stint, Schreiber gave birth to Gus in 2009. The on-and-off couple used artificial insemination to conceive the child. Because of this, the ex-girlfriend claimed Patric had no legal rights to the child.
In 2013, a judge ruled in agreement with Schreiber, but in May of 2014, a state appellate court reversed that ruling, stating Patric does have parental rights. A few weeks ago, a judge officially declared Patric the legal father of the 4-year-old boy. This means he will not be able to ask a court for visitation and custody rights.
While child custody battles can often seem endless and sometimes hopeless, Patric’s case is a good example of how experienced legal backing and persistence can pay off in the end. It may have taken him years to gain access to his son, but he would likely say it was well worth the effort. Florida parents who find themselves in a similar situation can discuss their case and options with an experienced attorney.
