Legal battle between Bill O'Reilly and ex-wife escalates

Bill O'Reilly is in the news and it's not for something that was said on his television show. The TV host is escalating his legal battle against his ex-wife, according to court documents.

A $14.5 million judgment was awarded to O'Reilly by a court, but the reason for the large award is not known. Most of the legal battle between O'Reilly and his ex-wife has been private, until now. His legal battle also includes a $10 million lawsuit filed against his ex-wife's divorce attorney.

The custody dispute between O'Reilly and his ex-wife was very contentious and ended when a New York court awarded custody of his children to his ex-wife. That led to a $10 million lawsuit filed by O'Reilly against his ex-wife. O'Reilly claimed that his ex-wife convinced him to enter into a consensual divorce.

On July 27, O'Reilly was awarded $10 million in Nassau County Court, but two months later the award rose to $14.4 million -- more than $4 million more than what he asked for in the suit. The increase in the award came after an inquest hearing to determine the actual damages.

The lawsuit O'Reilly filed against his ex-wife's attorney states the following: "Plaintiff alleges that Defendant aided and abetted Plaintiff's ex-wife, Maureen McPhilmy, in knowingly making false statements and material omissions of existing fact to Plaintiff, upon which Plaintiff relied to his extreme detriment, for the sole purpose of inducing Plaintiff to agree to consensual divorce and to obtain money and real property."

Like other aspects of the legal battle against his ex-wife, O'Reilly is asking for the lawsuit against the attorney to remain sealed. He wants the details to be kept secret so that they do not emotionally harm his children, who are minors.

Even though a Brooklyn appeals court awarded O'Reilly's ex-wife custody of the couple's children, the case rages on in Nassau County Court.
