What is the job of a mediator?

If you agree to divorce mediation, you may soon find that you and your former spouse are able to save a lot of time and money. While this is a good thing, you don't want to move forward with the process until you fully know what to expect.

Getting started means understanding the responsibilities of the mediator. You must know what this person will and will not do to ensure that you are on the right track from the start.

First things first, this person is involved to simply facilitate the conversation between both parties. The mediator hopes to move things along, one step at a time, with the goal of eventually handling each and every detail.

It is important to note that a mediator cannot force either party to do anything.

Mediators are also in position to collect a variety of information regarding the divorce, such as finances, assets, and family concerns. By taking this information from both partners, the person is in better position to provide a high level of service.

Note: Although a mediator is there to help both parties communicate and solve their issues, you have the right to bring an attorney with you to each session.

You should not go into divorce mediation with the idea that the mediator is going to act as a judge. This person does not have the authority to make any legal decisions. Instead, the mediator acts as a neutral party and hopes to help the couple sort through their issues.

If you are faced with divorce in Fort Lauderdale, you should at least look into the benefits of mediation.
